Symbol names differ from MetaTrader in WebTrader platforms

A plan, alert or journal written for MetaTrader refers to symbols that do not exist here, or that match a different contract.

What is causing it

Naming is set by the provider, so the same market can be named differently on every platform and may not even be the same contract.

Why this happens

Symbol names are labels chosen by whoever set up the feed, not an industry standard. Two entries a character apart can carry different contract sizes, so a position sized on an assumption carried over from MetaTrader can be several times larger or smaller than intended.

The fix, step by step

  1. Search for the underlying market by name rather than by the symbol you are used to.
  2. Look closely at suffixes and separators, which often distinguish account types, spread groups or cash versus futures-based contracts.
  3. Open the instrument's details and confirm contract size, value per point and currency before trading it.
  4. Be especially careful with indices and metals, where naming and contract sizes vary most between providers.
  5. Rewrite watchlists and alerts in this platform's names rather than translating them mentally each session.
  6. Where two similar entries exist, ask the provider which one your account should trade.

How to confirm it is fixed

A minimum-size position takes the margin you expected and moves by the value per point you expected.

Stopping it happening again

Keep a written mapping between the names you use on each platform, and verify contract size once per instrument rather than assuming.
