High latency or slow execution in cTrader

Orders are slow and latency looks high.

What is causing it

Distance to the server or a slow connection.

Why this happens

Latency is the round trip between your machine and the broker's servers, and every order makes that trip twice. Price can move in that window, so higher latency directly increases slippage and the chance of a worse fill. Physical distance sets the floor, since data cannot travel faster than the route allows, and no local setting will beat that floor.

Above the floor, stability matters more than the average. Wifi introduces variable delay and occasional packet loss, and a lost packet has to be resent, producing an occasional very slow order among otherwise normal ones. That inconsistency damages execution more than a slightly higher but steady latency, which is why a wired connection often improves results even when the average ping barely changes.

The fix, step by step

  1. Check the latency shown in cTrader and consider a broker server closer to you.
  2. Use a wired connection rather than wifi.
  3. For serious latency, run cTrader on a VPS near the broker server.
  4. Close other bandwidth-heavy apps.

How to confirm it is fixed

Watch the latency figure cTrader reports over several minutes rather than taking one reading, since you are looking for stability as much as a low number. In practice, the meaningful confirmation is fills arriving closer to the price you clicked and fewer unusually slow orders.

Stopping it happening again

Use a wired connection where you can and avoid trading over congested or shared networks when execution quality matters. If latency is genuinely critical to your strategy, a VPS close to the broker's servers is the real fix, but ask your broker where those servers are hosted rather than guessing, since it differs between brokers.
