The asymmetry

Losses and gains are not symmetric. Down 50 percent needs plus 100 percent. Down 80 percent, which is an ordinary crypto bear market, needs plus 400 percent. Down 90 percent needs plus 900 percent.

What to do with that

Size positions so that an 80 percent fall is survivable rather than ruinous. Avoiding the deepest drawdowns is worth far more than picking the best performer.

Common questions

How much do I need to gain to recover a 50 percent loss?

One hundred percent. The asymmetry gets worse quickly: an 80 percent loss needs a 400 percent gain.

Is an 80 percent drawdown normal in crypto?

Yes. Bitcoin has done it more than once and recovered. Most other assets fell as far and did not.
