Impermanent loss is badly named

Nothing takes it from you and it is not a fee. It is the arithmetic of a pool automatically selling whichever asset is rising. It becomes permanent the moment you withdraw.

When LPing tends to work

Pairs that track each other, such as two stablecoins, produce very little divergence and therefore very little impermanent loss. A volatile token against a stablecoin produces the most.

Common questions

What is impermanent loss?

The shortfall between the value of a liquidity position and simply holding both assets, caused by the pool rebalancing as prices diverge. It crystallises when you withdraw.

Can impermanent loss exceed the fees I earn?

Frequently, on volatile pairs. That is the whole reason to model it before depositing rather than after.
