How to pass a prop firm challenge

Most funded-account challenges (FTMO, FundedNext, The5ers and similar) set three numbers: a profit target, a maximum daily loss, and a maximum overall drawdown. This calculator converts those percentages into the actual dollar amounts for your account size, then shows how many winning trades it takes to reach the target at your chosen risk per trade and average risk-to-reward.

The maths behind passing

Profit target ($) = account size × target %. Daily loss limit ($) = account size × daily loss %. Max drawdown ($) = account size × drawdown %. Winning trades to pass = profit target ÷ (risk per trade $ × average R:R). Risking a small amount per trade, such as 0.5%, keeps you comfortably inside the drawdown limits while still reaching the target.

When our prop firm directory launches you will be able to compare firms by these exact rules side by side. For now, use this calculator to plan any challenge before you buy it.

Frequently asked questions

How do I pass a prop firm challenge like FTMO?

Convert the rules into dollars: the profit target, daily loss limit and maximum drawdown for your account size. Then risk a small, fixed percentage per trade (often 0.5% to 1%) with a positive risk-to-reward, so you reach the target in a manageable number of trades without breaching the loss limits.

How much should I risk per trade in a prop firm challenge?

Most traders who pass risk 0.5% to 1% per trade. With a strict daily loss limit (often 5%) and overall drawdown limit (often 10%), small risk per trade gives you room to survive losing streaks and still hit the profit target.

What is the difference between daily loss and max drawdown?

The daily loss limit is the most you can lose in a single trading day, resetting each day. The maximum drawdown is the most your account can fall from its starting balance (or high-water mark) across the whole challenge. Breaching either one usually fails the challenge.

How many trades does it take to pass a challenge?

It depends on your risk per trade and risk-to-reward. Risking 0.5% at an average 1:2 gives 1% profit per winning trade, so an 8% target needs about 8 clean winners. This calculator works it out for your exact numbers.
