Platform slow, or charts recalculating constantly in Sierra Chart

Scrolling stutters, charts take a long time to refresh, and the machine works hard during active markets.

What is causing it

Too many charts loaded, too much history per chart, or heavy studies recalculating over a large data set.

Why this happens

Studies are calculated over the loaded data set, so the cost of every study scales with how much history the chart holds. Loading months of intraday data on a dozen charts multiplies that work considerably.

The result is that trimming history usually produces a bigger improvement than any other single change.

The fix, step by step

  1. Reduce the number of days each chart loads, since this is the single largest influence on both memory use and recalculation time.
  2. Close chartbooks you are not using, because an open chartbook keeps its charts and their data live.
  3. Review studies that recalculate over the whole chart on every update, and reduce how many of them you run at once.
  4. Prefer fewer, well-chosen charts over a large grid of similar ones.
  5. Split research and live trading into separate chartbooks so a heavy analysis layout is not loaded during the session.
  6. Check the machine has memory free while everything is loaded, as swapping to disk will make the platform feel far worse than it is.

How to confirm it is fixed

Charts scroll and update smoothly during the busiest part of the session with your full trading layout open.

Stopping it happening again

Set a sensible days-to-load default and keep trading chartbooks deliberately lean.
