MetaTrader 5 Problems and Fixes
MetaTrader 5 is reliable, but a wrong server, a disabled setting or a broker-side issue can stop it working. Below are the most common MT5 problems with a clear symptom, the likely cause and a known-working fix for each. Jump to your issue, or read through.
No connection
Symptom: The status in the bottom right shows "No connection" and prices are not updating.
Cause: Usually a wrong server, wrong login, or no route to the broker.
- Check your internet connection is working.
- Open File, then Login to Trade Account.
- Confirm the Server matches the one in your broker email exactly. Brokers often list several, such as BrokerName-Live and BrokerName-Demo.
- Re-enter your account number and password, watching for caps lock.
- Right-click the connection status and choose Rescan Servers or a different data centre.
- If it still fails, contact your broker to confirm the account is active and not in maintenance.
Invalid account or authorization failed
Symptom: You get "Invalid account" or "Authorization failed" when logging in.
Cause: The login, password or server does not match, or the account was reset by the broker.
- Copy the login (account number), password and server directly from your broker welcome email.
- Make sure you are using the trader password, not the investor (read-only) password.
- Pick the exact server from the dropdown, not a similarly named one.
- If you recently changed your password, log in with the new one.
- If nothing works, reset the password in your broker client area and try again.
Off quotes error
Symptom: Placing an order returns "Off quotes" and the order does not go through.
Cause: The price moved before the order filled, the market is thin, or the broker has no live price for that symbol.
- Increase the maximum deviation or slippage in the order window before sending.
- Avoid placing market orders in the seconds around major news.
- Check the symbol is actually trading and not closed for the session.
- Refresh the symbol by removing and re-adding it to Market Watch.
- If it persists on one symbol only, contact your broker as the feed may be down.
Trade context is busy
Symptom: You see "Trade context is busy" and cannot send an order.
Cause: Another order or an Expert Advisor is already using the trade thread.
- Wait a second or two and try again, as it usually clears itself.
- Close any order confirmation windows that are still open.
- If an EA is placing rapid trades, pause it before trading manually.
- Restart MetaTrader 5 if it stays stuck.
Market closed
Symptom: The order button is greyed out or you see "Market closed".
Cause: The instrument is outside its trading hours, or it is the weekend.
- Check the trading session for that symbol by right-clicking it, then Specification.
- Remember forex is closed from Friday evening to Sunday evening, and stocks and indices follow exchange hours.
- Confirm your broker is open and not in a holiday session.
Not enough money
Symptom: You get "Not enough money" when trying to open a trade.
Cause: Your free margin is too low for the lot size and leverage.
- Reduce the lot size. Use our free position size calculator to size correctly.
- Check your free margin in the Trade tab, not just the balance.
- Close or reduce open positions to release margin.
- Confirm your account leverage in the broker client area if the required margin looks too high.
AutoTrading disabled, EA or indicator not trading
Symptom: An Expert Advisor or indicator is loaded but not placing trades, and there is a sad face on the chart.
Cause: The AutoTrading button is off, or automated trading is blocked in options.
- Click the AutoTrading button in the top toolbar so it turns green.
- Open Tools, Options, Expert Advisors and tick "Allow Algo Trading".
- On the EA, open its properties (F7) and confirm "Allow Algo Trading" is ticked.
- Make sure the smiley face on the chart is smiling, not frowning.
Indicator not showing on the chart
Symptom: You attached an indicator but nothing appears.
Cause: The files are in the wrong folder, or the indicator drew off-screen.
- Open File, then Open Data Folder, then MQL5, then Indicators, and confirm the indicator file is there.
- In MetaTrader 5 use Refresh in the Navigator, then drag the indicator onto the chart again.
- Check the indicator did not draw far above or below the visible price. Press the "Auto scroll" and reset the chart scale.
- Restart MetaTrader 5 so it recompiles and reloads indicators.
WebRequest is not allowed
Symptom: An indicator or EA that checks a licence or fetches data shows "WebRequest is not allowed for URL".
Cause: The URL is not in the MetaTrader 5 allowed list. This is the most common Market Structure Pro install issue.
- Open Tools, then Options, then the Expert Advisors tab.
- Tick "Allow WebRequest for listed URL".
- Add the exact URL shown in the error, for MSP that is https://www.traderindicators.net
- Click OK, then remove and re-attach the indicator.
- See the full MSP install guide at /install if you are setting up Market Structure Pro.
DLL imports are not allowed
Symptom: An EA shows "DLL imports are not allowed".
Cause: The EA needs external DLL calls, which are blocked by default for safety.
- Only enable this for an EA you trust.
- Open the EA properties (F7), go to the Common tab, and tick "Allow DLL imports".
- If needed, also enable it in Tools, Options, Expert Advisors.
- Re-attach the EA to the chart.
Charts frozen or prices not updating
Symptom: The chart is stuck and the clock or prices are not moving even though you are connected.
Cause: A temporary feed glitch, a heavy template, or the terminal needs a refresh.
- Right-click the chart and choose Refresh.
- Switch the timeframe and switch back to force a redraw.
- Remove very heavy indicators or templates that may be lagging the terminal.
- Restart MetaTrader 5, and if it continues, reinstall from your broker.
Missing history or gaps in the bars
Symptom: Older candles are missing or there are gaps in the chart.
Cause: The history for that symbol and timeframe has not been downloaded.
- Scroll left on the chart to trigger a history download.
- Open Tools, Options, Charts and raise "Max bars in chart" to a large number.
- Right-click the chart, choose Refresh, and wait for the bars to load.
- For deep history, some brokers require you to open the symbol on a lower timeframe first.
Cannot find your broker server in the list
Symptom: When adding an account, your broker server is not in the dropdown.
Cause: You are using a generic MetaTrader 5 download, not your broker version, or the server list is out of date.
- Download MetaTrader 5 from your own broker rather than a generic source, so their servers are preloaded.
- In the login window, type the exact server name and press Enter to add it.
- Use File, Open an Account, search your broker name, and select their company.
High ping or slow execution
Symptom: Orders are slow to fill and the ping to the server is high.
Cause: You are far from the broker server, or on a slow or unstable connection.
- Right-click the connection status to see your ping and pick the fastest data centre.
- Use a wired connection instead of wifi where possible.
- For serious latency, run MetaTrader 5 on a VPS located near your broker server.
- Close other heavy apps and browser tabs using bandwidth.
Indicators or EAs disappear after restart
Symptom: Your tools are gone from the Navigator after closing and reopening MT5.
Cause: They were saved to the wrong data folder, or a different installation is being opened.
- Confirm you always open the same MetaTrader 5 installation, not a second copy.
- Place files via File, Open Data Folder, so they go to the correct MQL5 folders.
- After adding files, right-click Indicators or Expert Advisors in the Navigator and choose Refresh.
Terminal running slow or using high CPU
Symptom: MetaTrader 5 is sluggish and your computer fan is loud.
Cause: Too many open charts, heavy indicators, or a large journal and logs.
- Close charts you are not using and reduce the number of loaded indicators.
- Lower "Max bars in chart" in Tools, Options, Charts.
- Delete old log files from the Logs folder inside the data folder.
- Restart the terminal, and consider a VPS if you run many EAs.
