Off quotes error in MetaTrader 5

Placing an order returns "Off quotes" and the order does not go through.

What is causing it

The price moved before the order filled, the market is thin, or the broker has no live price for that symbol.

Why this happens

A market order in MetaTrader is not a request to trade at whatever price exists when the broker reads it. It carries the price you saw plus a maximum deviation you are willing to accept. The broker compares your requested price with the current one, and if the difference exceeds the deviation you allowed, it refuses the fill rather than giving you a worse price than you agreed to. The rejection is a protection, not a fault, which is why it clusters around news releases and thin sessions where prices move several points between your click and the broker receiving it.

The other version of the same rejection has nothing to do with speed. If the broker has no current two-sided quote for that symbol, because the feed for it has dropped or the instrument is between sessions, there is no price to compare against and the order cannot be priced at all. That case is specific to one symbol while everything else fills normally, which is the quickest way to tell the two apart.

The fix, step by step

  1. Increase the maximum deviation or slippage in the order window before sending.
  2. Avoid placing market orders in the seconds around major news.
  3. Check the symbol is actually trading and not closed for the session.
  4. Refresh the symbol by removing and re-adding it to Market Watch.
  5. If it persists on one symbol only, contact your broker as the feed may be down.

How to confirm it is fixed

Send a small test order on a liquid major pair away from a news release. It should fill and appear in the Trade tab with an open price, and the Toolbox will show the deal. If you widened your deviation to fix it, check the fill price against the price you clicked so you know how much slippage you actually accepted, since a very large deviation removes the protection rather than fixing the cause.

Stopping it happening again

Use pending orders rather than market orders around scheduled high-impact news, so you set the price rather than chasing it. Set a deviation that reflects the normal spread on the instrument you trade instead of a blanket large number. If one symbol rejects repeatedly while others fill, treat it as a broker feed issue and report it rather than raising deviation further.
