MetaTrader 4 Problems and Fixes

MetaTrader 4 has been around for years and is very stable, but connection settings, disabled options or broker issues can still stop it working. Here are the most common MT4 problems with a symptom, likely cause and a known-working fix. Jump to your issue below.

No connection

Symptom: The bottom right shows "No connection" and quotes are frozen.

Cause: Usually a wrong server or login, or no route to the broker.

  1. Check your internet is working.
  2. Go to File, Login to Trade Account.
  3. Confirm the Server exactly matches your broker email, as brokers list several.
  4. Re-enter the login number and password carefully.
  5. Right-click the connection status and Rescan Servers.
  6. Contact your broker if the account may be inactive.

Invalid account

Symptom: Login returns "Invalid account".

Cause: The login, password or server do not match, or the account is a demo that has expired.

  1. Copy the login, password and server from your broker email.
  2. Use the trader (master) password, not the investor password.
  3. Select the exact server from the list.
  4. Demo accounts expire, so open a fresh demo if yours has lapsed.
  5. Reset the password in your broker area if it still fails.

Off quotes

Symptom: An order returns "Off quotes".

Cause: The price changed before filling, or there is no live quote for the symbol.

  1. Raise the "Maximum deviation" (slippage) in the order window.
  2. Avoid trading the exact moment of high-impact news.
  3. Confirm the symbol is open and trading.
  4. Re-add the symbol to Market Watch to refresh the feed.

Trade context is busy

Symptom: You cannot send an order because the trade context is busy.

Cause: An EA or a previous order is using the trade thread.

  1. Wait a moment and retry.
  2. Close any open order dialog boxes.
  3. Pause any EA that is trading rapidly.
  4. Restart MT4 if it stays stuck.

Trade is disabled

Symptom: The order buttons are greyed out and show "Trade is disabled".

Cause: The account is read-only (investor password), the market is closed, or trading is restricted.

  1. Log in with the trader password, not the investor password.
  2. Check the symbol trading hours and that the market is open.
  3. Confirm your account type allows trading and is fully verified with the broker.

Market closed

Symptom: You cannot trade a symbol and it says the market is closed.

Cause: The instrument is outside its session hours.

  1. Right-click the symbol, choose Specification, and check the trading times.
  2. Remember forex closes over the weekend and indices follow exchange hours.

EA not trading, sad smiley face

Symptom: Your Expert Advisor shows a sad face in the top right of the chart and does not trade.

Cause: AutoTrading is off, or the EA is not allowed to trade.

  1. Click the AutoTrading button in the toolbar so it is green.
  2. Open Tools, Options, Expert Advisors and tick "Allow automated trading".
  3. On the EA, press F7 and tick "Allow live trading" on the Common tab.
  4. Confirm the face becomes a happy smiley.

Custom indicator not showing

Symptom: You added a custom indicator but it does not appear.

Cause: The .ex4 or .mq4 file is in the wrong folder, or it needs a recompile.

  1. Open File, Open Data Folder, MQL4, Indicators, and confirm the file is there.
  2. In the Navigator, right-click Indicators and choose Refresh.
  3. Drag the indicator onto the chart again.
  4. Restart MT4 so it recompiles.

Allow WebRequest or allow DLL

Symptom: A tool needs internet access or a DLL and is blocked.

Cause: WebRequest URLs and DLL imports are blocked by default for safety.

  1. Open Tools, Options, Expert Advisors.
  2. Tick "Allow WebRequest for listed URL" and add the exact URL.
  3. For DLLs, tick "Allow DLL imports", and only for tools you trust.
  4. Re-attach the tool to the chart.

Charts not updating

Symptom: The chart is frozen although you appear connected.

Cause: A feed glitch or a heavy template.

  1. Right-click the chart and choose Refresh.
  2. Change the timeframe and change back.
  3. Remove heavy indicators that may be lagging MT4.
  4. Restart the terminal.

Waiting for update, stuck

Symptom: The chart shows "Waiting for update" and never loads.

Cause: The terminal cannot pull history for that symbol, often after a reconnect.

  1. Right-click the chart and Refresh.
  2. Switch to a lower timeframe, then back up.
  3. Remove and re-add the symbol from Market Watch.
  4. Log out and back in to the trade account.

Missing symbols in Market Watch

Symptom: The symbol you want is not in Market Watch.

Cause: The full symbol list is hidden.

  1. Right-click Market Watch and choose Show All, or Symbols.
  2. In the Symbols window, expand the group and enable the instrument.
  3. If it is still missing, your account type may not include it, so check with the broker.

Cannot log in after a password change

Symptom: You changed your password and now cannot log in.

Cause: MT4 is still using the old saved password.

  1. Go to File, Login to Trade Account and enter the new password.
  2. Untick "Save account information" if you want to force a fresh login each time.
  3. If it still fails, reset the password again in your broker client area.
