Trading Instruments: What to Trade and How Each One Behaves

Every market has a personality. Gold does not behave like EUR/USD, and the Nasdaq does not behave like the FTSE. These guides cover what each instrument actually is, what moves it, the hours it is worth trading, and the strategies that suit it, written for brand new traders, for people whose results are inconsistent, and for professionals who just want the mechanics.

New here? Read this first.

You do not need to trade many markets. You need to understand one. Pick a single instrument, learn when it moves and when it does not, and stay with it until its behaviour is familiar. Every guide below is written so you can do exactly that.

How to choose what to trade

Start with your available hours, not the instrument

The most common mistake is picking a market and then trying to trade it at whatever time happens to be convenient. It does not work. A EUR/USD breakout strategy run at 03:00 UTC is being applied to an empty order book. Work out when you can realistically sit at a chart, then choose an instrument that is genuinely active in those hours. Our session times by timezone page maps this out for every major region.

Match volatility to your account size

A small account on a fast instrument is the quickest way to run out of money. If your account is modest, a slower market with tight spreads gives you more room to be wrong while you learn. You can always move up. Use the position size calculator to see what a sensible position actually looks like before you place it.

Understand the cost before the strategy

Spread and commission come out of every trade regardless of whether you are right. On a wide-spread instrument with a small daily range, cost can consume most of a realistic edge. Compare typical spreads across our broker directory, and use the spread cost calculator to see the real figure per trade.

Where Market Structure Pro fits

Learning an instrument's personality takes months of screen time. Market Structure Pro shortens that curve by doing the reading for you on any MT5 chart: one verdict (TRADE, TRANSITION or NO TRADE) with a confidence score, an A/B/C grade and a plain-English explanation of what is supporting or limiting it.

It adapts to the instrument. It knows the session, watches the live spread, and has a dedicated filter whose only job is to say NO TRADE when a market is choppy or dead. That means the same tool is honest on a quiet EUR/GBP morning and on a fast Nasdaq open, instead of applying one fixed set of thresholds to markets that behave nothing alike.

TRADETRANSITIONNO TRADE

Non-repainting. Works on every MT5 instrument and timeframe. Free 7-day trial, no card required.

Frequently asked questions

What should I trade as a beginner?

Start with one liquid instrument and learn it properly rather than watching many. EUR/USD is the usual recommendation because it has the tightest spreads, the deepest liquidity and the most predictable behaviour. Gold and the US indices are popular but move faster and punish oversized positions.

How many instruments should I trade?

One or two while you are learning. Every instrument has its own personality, its own active hours and its own reaction to news, and that knowledge takes screen time to build. Traders who watch ten markets usually understand none of them well enough to have an edge.

What is the difference between forex, indices, commodities and stocks?

Forex is one currency priced against another and trades 24 hours on weekdays. Indices are baskets of shares, most active during their own exchange's cash session. Commodities are physical markets driven by supply and demand. Stocks are individual companies, where quarterly earnings dominate the risk. Each needs a different approach.

Which instrument moves the most?

Among commonly traded markets, crypto is the most volatile, followed by instruments like GBP/JPY, natural gas and the Nasdaq. Volatility is not an advantage in itself; it means both profits and losses arrive faster, so position size has to shrink as volatility rises.

Does Market Structure Pro work on all of these?

Yes. MSP works on every instrument and timeframe MetaTrader 5 supports, and it adapts its read to the instrument's own volatility, session and spread conditions rather than applying one fixed set of thresholds.

Can I trade all of these on MT5?

Most brokers offer forex, indices, commodities and crypto CFDs on MT5, and many now offer individual share CFDs too. Exactly what is available depends on your broker, so check the symbol list before planning around a particular market.
