CFDs vs Spot vs Futures: Which Should You Trade?

CFDs, spot and futures are three different wrappers around the same market exposure. The chart looks almost identical in all three; what changes is who your counterparty is, what the position costs to hold, and whether the contract has an expiry date.

What it is and why it works

The confusing part of this comparison is that all three routes can show you the same instrument, at almost the same price, moving at almost the same time. A EUR/USD chart at a CFD broker and a EUR/USD futures chart at an exchange trace nearly the same path. What differs is not the market. It is the legal contract sitting between you and that market, and that contract determines your costs, your risks and the smallest bet you are allowed to make.

Spot means the cash market for immediate delivery. With shares or crypto, spot can be literal: you buy it, you own it, it is yours, and nobody is charging you to keep holding it. In retail foreign exchange the word is close to a misnomer. No currency is ever delivered. Your position is rolled forward every night with an interest adjustment, and you are facing your broker across an over-the-counter contract. In several jurisdictions the product a broker labels “spot FX” is legally a contract for difference anyway, which is worth knowing before you assume the two are different things.

A CFD is an agreement between you and your broker to exchange the difference in an instrument’s price between the moment you open and the moment you close. You never own the underlying. You get no shareholder rights, though share and index CFDs receive cash adjustments around dividend dates. The contract has no expiry, you can size it fractionally, and you can hold hundreds of markets in one account. The trade-off is that your open profit is a claim on your broker, not on a clearing house, which is why the choice of firm matters more here than in any other part of this comparison. Futures are standardised contracts listed on an exchange. Size, tick value and expiry are fixed by the exchange rather than by your broker, and once your order is filled the trade is novated to a clearing house that becomes the counterparty to both sides. You see genuine exchange volume and depth. Margin requirements are set by the exchange, not by a firm competing for your account. None of that makes futures safe: they are leveraged instruments, they gap, and your cash sits with a clearing broker who is a business like any other. But the structure is more transparent, and for positions held longer than a few days it is usually the cheaper structure too.

How to trade it, step by step

  1. Start with what is actually available to you. Your country of residence removes options before you compare anything. Retail clients in the United States cannot trade CFDs, so the real choice there is spot versus futures. Elsewhere all three are typically available. Check this first, because half the comparisons written on this subject are irrelevant to the reader’s own situation.
  2. Write down your typical holding period before you look at a single cost. If you close everything the same day, overnight financing is irrelevant and spread plus commission decides which route is cheaper. If you hold for days or weeks, financing becomes the dominant cost and it flips the answer. Answer “how long do I hold?” honestly from your last fifty trades, not from how you intend to trade.
  3. Work out the smallest position each route allows, then compare it with your risk per trade. Take your account size, take the percentage you risk per trade, and take a realistic stop distance for the instrument. Put those into the position size calculator. If a single micro futures contract with that stop already risks more than your limit, futures are not viable at your current account size, not because they are worse, but because you cannot size them correctly.
  4. Price the same trade three ways over a realistic holding period. Take one instrument you actually trade, one position size, and one hold length. Add the spread, the commission both ways, and the financing or roll cost for that many nights. Do it for each route. The differences that matter show up in this arithmetic, not in a features table, and short holds and long holds usually give opposite answers.
  5. Decide how much you need real volume and depth. If your method reads order flow, footprint, depth of market or volume profile, futures are the only one of the three that gives you the genuine article. If your method is built on price structure and levels, broker-fed data is perfectly adequate and this factor should not sway you.
  6. Read what happens to your money if the firm fails. For CFDs and retail spot, find out how client money is segregated, which regulator supervises the entity you are contracting with, and whether any compensation scheme applies to you specifically. For futures, understand that the clearing house guarantees the contract but your cash still sits with a clearing broker. Do this reading once, in writing, before funding anything.
  7. Check the expiry and corporate-action mechanics of the instrument you want. With futures, know your contract’s expiry date and your broker’s liquidation policy if you are still holding into it. With share and index CFDs, know how the broker adjusts your position for dividends and how borrow costs are applied to short positions. Being surprised by either of these is entirely avoidable.
  8. Trade the route you can execute calmly, not the one that scores best on paper. Run a small live position on your shortlisted route for a couple of weeks before committing. A structure that is theoretically cheaper but whose sizing you get wrong under pressure is more expensive than the one you handle correctly.

The conditions it needs

CFDs suit you if you have a small account, trade many markets, and hold for hours to a few days

This is the honest sweet spot for CFDs. Fractional sizing means a trader with a modest account can risk a consistent, small percentage on every trade instead of being forced into an oversized contract. One account gives you indices, metals, currencies and shares, so you are not maintaining several relationships to trade the same watchlist. And if you close positions the same day or hold only briefly, the financing cost that makes CFDs expensive over time barely touches you.

Futures suit you if you are properly funded, hold for days or longer, or trade in the United States

Once your account can absorb the fixed size of a micro contract at a sensible risk percentage, futures become the stronger structure for anyone holding beyond a day or two. There is no nightly financing charge marked up over a benchmark rate; the carry is priced into the contract and you pay it again only when you roll. You get real volume and depth, an official settlement price, and a central clearing house rather than a single firm standing behind your profit.

US-based retail traders effectively arrive here by default, since CFDs are not available to them. That is not a downgrade. It is arguably the better structure; the constraint is simply that you must have enough capital to size a standardised contract correctly, and the discipline to manage expiry and rollover yourself.

Spot ownership suits you if your horizon is measured in months or years and you do not want leverage

If your intention is to hold a share, an ETF or a coin for a long period, buying the underlying and owning it outright is usually the right answer and the derivative wrappers are simply a worse deal. You pay no nightly financing, you cannot be closed out by a margin call on a temporary drawdown, and you keep the rights that come with ownership. If the deciding factor in your comparison is which route lets you control the largest position from the smallest deposit, you are not choosing a contract structure; you are choosing how quickly to lose. Available leverage is a constraint, never a target, and a trader with a tested method uses only a fraction of what is offered whichever route they take.

If you are new, here is the short version. All three routes let you profit from a market going up or down. The differences that will actually affect you in your first year are how small a position you are allowed to take, and how much you are charged to keep it open overnight.

Small accounts almost always start with CFDs or retail spot, for one practical reason: you can size a position to risk a genuinely small percentage of your account. That is the single most important thing you can do early on, and a standardised futures contract may simply be too big to allow it. Once you are choosing a broker, remember that with a CFD the broker is the other side of your trade, so pick a properly regulated firm and read how client money is held.

One thing to avoid completely: do not choose based on which route offers the most leverage. Leverage is a limit, not a feature to maximise, and treating it as a selling point is the most reliable way to blow up an account early.

If your results are inconsistent

The intermediate mistake is comparing structures in the abstract instead of pricing your own trading. Export your last fifty trades and calculate the average holding period. If most positions are closed the same day, financing is nearly irrelevant to you and your decision comes down to spread, commission and execution quality, which usually leaves CFDs perfectly competitive. If your average hold is measured in days or weeks, financing is quietly one of your largest costs and futures deserve a serious look.

The second adjustment is sizing. Traders who migrate from CFDs to futures often keep their old notional exposure by accident because they think in lots rather than in ticks. Finally, stop assuming the two feeds are interchangeable. A CFD on an index is priced off the future, and around rolls, dividend dates and thin sessions the two can differ enough to matter for a tight stop sitting just beyond a level.

At a professional level this is a cost-of-carry and counterparty-quality decision, and it should be re-made per instrument rather than once for the whole book. Model the all-in cost curve for each route as a function of holding period: CFD financing accrues linearly with the nights held, while the futures cost is a stepped function of roll frequency plus the roll spread. The crossover point is instrument-specific and moves with the rate environment. For anything held into weeks, the daily financing markup over the benchmark rate is usually the decisive number.

Counterparty analysis deserves the same rigour. With CFDs you hold an unsecured claim on the broker’s balance sheet; segregation regimes, entity of contract and compensation eligibility vary by jurisdiction and by which group entity actually onboarded you. With futures the clearing house novates the trade, but concentration at a single clearing broker is still a real exposure. Neither structure removes the need to know exactly whose failure would hurt you.

Data quality is the remaining differentiator. If your process uses depth, volume profile or delta, the CFD feed is a derived approximation and you should not build inference on it. If your process is structural and level-based, the feeds are close enough that you should decide on cost and sizing granularity, and stop paying for transparency you will not use.

Risk management for this strategy

The risk differences between these three routes are less about danger and more about control. CFDs give you the finest control over position size, which is a genuine risk-management advantage: you can hold your risk per trade constant across instruments with wildly different volatility. Futures take that control away in small increments; you can only trade whole contracts, so on a small account your effective risk per trade jumps around depending on which market you are in and how wide the stop needs to be. Spot ownership without leverage carries the least mechanical risk of all, because there is no margin call and no forced close, only the market itself.

Leverage and gaps behave the same way in all three. A stop is an instruction, not a guarantee, and in a fast market you can be filled well beyond it in any of these products. What differs is what happens afterwards. Negative balance protection is a regulatory requirement for retail clients in some jurisdictions and not in others, and it may not apply to professional clients even where it exists: check your own account documentation rather than assuming. On futures, a deficit is simply owed to the clearing broker. In every case the practical defence is the same: size the position from the stop distance, keep the risk per trade small and fixed, and never let the availability of leverage set your size for you.
