You are trading the wrong contract month in Tradovate

Fills are poor, the spread is unusually wide, volume is low, or your price does not match what everyone else is quoting.

What is causing it

You have selected a back month or an expiring contract rather than the actively traded front month.

Why this happens

Each contract month is a separate tradeable instrument. After the roll, almost all activity moves to the next month, leaving the old one thin and eventually non-tradeable, but still selectable.

Nothing prevents you from trading a thin month, so the only symptom is poor liquidity and a price that disagrees with everyone else.

The fix, step by step

  1. Check the contract month on the symbol you have selected against the month the market is actively trading, which rolls on an exchange schedule.
  2. Switch to the front-month contract and confirm the volume looks normal for that product.
  3. Close any position you accidentally opened in the wrong month rather than leaving it, because liquidity will only get worse.
  4. Check watchlists, charts and any saved layouts, as they can retain an old month long after the roll.
  5. If you must hold across a roll, plan how you will move the position rather than discovering the problem on expiry day.

How to confirm it is fixed

Volume and spread on your selected contract look normal for that product during regular hours, and the price matches an independent quote.

Stopping it happening again

Check your symbols on roll dates, and prefer symbol settings that follow the front month automatically where the platform offers that.
