ZKsync (ZK): tokenomics, risks and score

40/100SCORE · DCaution Grade D, caution

An EVM compatible zero knowledge rollup with fast withdrawals, and an elastic chain framework for launching connected zk chains.

What ZKsync is, and what it does

This is a scaling layer. It processes transactions away from a base chain and periodically settles back to it, so transactions cost far less while still relying on the base chain for security.

What the ZK token itself does: ZK is a governance token. Gas is paid in ETH and the token does not receive sequencer revenue.

Where it runs: ZKsync Era. Mechanism: zk rollup settling to Ethereum. It has been running since 2024, so roughly 2 years.

Each dimension is explained on the directory page, and the reasoning behind it is taught in the Academy research process.

Supply and value capture

A hard maximum supply that cannot be raised without the agreement of essentially every participant. The token captures no protocol revenue. Any value rests on governance rights, speculation, or future changes that have not happened yet.

ZK is a governance token. Gas is paid in ETH and the token does not receive sequencer revenue.

The founding team retains control over upgrades or parameters. Ownership is heavily concentrated. A small number of wallets hold enough to determine the price on their own.

Where it is strong and where it is not

✓ Strengths
  • Supply is capped, so holders are not diluted indefinitely
  • Audited, with published reports
  • Fully open source, so the code can be independently reviewed
✗ Weaknesses
  • Heavily concentrated ownership means a few wallets control the outcome
  • The token captures no protocol revenue, so its value rests on sentiment
  • Significant supply is still scheduled to unlock, which is a structural headwind
  • Upgrade control sits with a small group, so the rules can change

Incident history

No major exploit, collapse or regulatory action on record against this asset.

Our read

Technically credible zk work with genuine EVM compatibility, which Starknet lacks. Its airdrop in 2024 was among the most criticised in the sector, with a substantial proportion of the distribution going to addresses widely believed to be farmed rather than to genuine users, which damaged community trust. The token captures no revenue and unlocks remain heavy.

The main risk

No fee capture, a heavily criticised distribution, and large scheduled unlocks against modest network activity.

Before you buy anything

Check the contract address against the project's own documentation rather than a search result or a screener link, since impersonation tokens with identical names and logos are listed constantly. Check the order book depth before assuming you can exit at the quoted price. And write down what would make you wrong before you buy, not after. The Academy thesis module covers why that single habit protects more capital than any indicator.
