Hivemapper (HONEY): tokenomics, risks and score

59/100SCORE · CMixed record Grade C, fair

A mapping network where drivers fit a dashcam and are paid in tokens for the street level imagery they collect, building a rival to established mapping data.

What Hivemapper is, and what it does

This is a DePIN network. It pays people to supply real physical infrastructure such as wireless coverage, sensors, storage or mapping, and sells the resulting service or data.

What the HONEY token itself does: Fees are used to buy and destroy the token, so usage of the protocol permanently reduces the supply.

Where it runs: Solana. Mechanism: Mapping network with dashcam contributors. It has been running since 2022, so roughly 4 years.

Each dimension is explained on the directory page, and the reasoning behind it is taught in the Academy research process.

Supply and value capture

A hard maximum supply that cannot be raised without the agreement of essentially every participant. Fees are used to buy and destroy supply, so usage reduces the number of tokens outstanding.

Changes go through token holder governance, so control is distributed but influenced by whoever holds most. Ownership is moderately concentrated. A handful of large holders could move the market.

Where it is strong and where it is not

✓ Strengths
  • Supply is capped, so holders are not diluted indefinitely
  • The token captures real protocol revenue rather than relying on speculation alone
  • Audited, with published reports
  • Fully open source, so the code can be independently reviewed
✗ Weaknesses
  • Thin liquidity. Check order book depth before assuming you can exit

Incident history

No major exploit, collapse or regulatory action on record against this asset.

Our read

One of the clearest DePIN products because the output is genuinely valuable and expensive to produce conventionally, and it has real enterprise customers buying map data. Tokens are burned when data is purchased, tying supply to demand. Coverage remains far behind incumbents with enormous head starts.

The main risk

Coverage is far behind incumbent mapping providers, and enterprise demand is concentrated in few customers.

Before you buy anything

Check the contract address against the project's own documentation rather than a search result or a screener link, since impersonation tokens with identical names and logos are listed constantly. Check the order book depth before assuming you can exit at the quoted price. And write down what would make you wrong before you buy, not after. The Academy thesis module covers why that single habit protects more capital than any indicator.
