Full review

City Index is one of the UK's oldest online trading brands, founded in 1983 and now part of NASDAQ-listed StoneX Group after passing through GAIN Capital ownership. It is a well-regulated, established broker (FCA, ASIC, MAS) offering spread betting (tax-free for UK clients), CFDs and forex across roughly 13,500 markets including currencies, indices, commodities, shares and a limited crypto CFD range.

On platforms, City Index offers its own Web Trader (which replaced the older AT Pro), MT4 and TradingView, but does not offer MT5 or cTrader, so Market Structure Pro cannot be used. It operates a market-maker execution model rather than DMA or ECN. Costs are competitive on forex (spreads from about 0.5 pips, no separate commission), though stock CFDs carry commissions and there is an inactivity fee after a year. Deposits have effectively no minimum, a demo is available and support runs 24/5.

The broker suits UK and international CFD and spread-betting traders who value regulation, breadth of markets and a polished proprietary platform. It is not available to US or Canadian clients, does not offer real share ownership, and its non-UK presence has been contracting as StoneX consolidates brands.

City Index is a long-established UK broker, part of NASDAQ-listed StoneX Group and FCA-authorised (StoneX Financial Ltd), rated well by independent reviewers (Trustpilot 4.5/5, BrokerChooser 4.4/5), though Trustpilot volume is modest (~390). No regulator fines or credible scam evidence found. The lone outlier is WikiFX's low 1.6/10, which stems from WikiFX incorrectly flagging its regulatory status as 'unverified' despite City Index being genuinely FCA-regulated, so that score should be discounted.
